Helping Shelter Dogs Smile: Jazzy
Two weeks ago I posted about how our local shelter allows volunteers to take the dogs looking for homes on field trips. It helps the dogs get out of the shelter to get exercise and meet people, and allows the volunteers to have a fun day hanging with some really awesome dogs!
This post was a hard one to write. Friday, October 26th, David and I took Jazzy here on a field trip from Louisville Metro Animal Services just like we had earlier that week with Zoomie. We figured we would take her to a couple of places, get a burger, have a beer and nap on the couch at 3rd Turn Brewing and head back. Well, we did all of those things. But we also fell in love with her. We went back and forth about adding her to our already large family of 5 dogs but decided we needed some time to think about it because these field trips weren’t about this. We weren’t looking for a new dog. We just wanted to help them find their forever homes...we never thought ours would be one.
When we were dropping Jazzy back off at the shelter, we talked with the adoptions coordinator to get a bit more information about her and express our interest in possibly adopting her. She said that in all the time Jazzy had been there, no one had shown any interest so we felt safe leaving her for the night to give us a chance to get our bearings after an emotional day.
The next day David had to work in the morning and we didn’t get a real chance to make any solid plans yet. I was perusing Facebook while David worked and I saw a notification pop up about a post in the foster/volunteer’s group page. My heart sunk. Someone had come into the shelter that morning and decided to adopt Jazzy. We had taken her all over town the day before telling everyone we passed that this sweet girl was looking for a home. We had done exactly what we were supposed to on these field trips. We had helped find her a home.
Needless to say, we were a bit heartbroken but it was bittersweet because Jazzy was adopted! Just not by us.
One would hope this would be the end of the story. But no such luck. This week, when we went in to pick up our next field trip pup, we found out that by no fault of her own, Jazzy had ended up in a Bloomington, Indiana shelter and her new owner did not want her back.
Hopefully this week we will go up to the shelter to transport her back to Louisville Metro. From there, we’re not sure what will happen but we’re really glad that the IN shelter got in contact with our shelter and Jazzy will be back here to find her perfect home.
Our field trip with Jazzy has meant so much to us because she has opened our hearts to the idea of adding a pit bull to our house...our number 6.
So if and when we fall head over heels again, or it works out with Jazzy, we’ll be ready to open our home as well.
